The End is Just the Beginning

Hey!  It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged. I’ve been super busy with summer; we’ve had company non-stop  July 4th through Labor Day and it’s been wonderful (with more to come)!!!  Family, friends, dogs (well, one  dog), more family  and more friends have stopped by or stayed with us and enjoyed the wonderful Adirondacks and maybe a little of our company.  With some of our guests we’ve been to the Wild Center Natural History Center for member’s only cocktail  parties and hot dog and beer nights while strolling the museum’s outdoor trails and indoor live-animal displays. Everyone loves the live otters and fish,  and the scientific and historical descriptions of Adirondack geology, geography, and botany are well written and easy to understand.  I especially liked the rotting, degrading, beetle-devouring coyote carcass.  But maybe next time we’ll stay away from the hot dog and beer night, as Greg and Allan were bowled over by one very hungry senior-or citizen on her singular quest for a texas-red-hot despite the queue.  We’ve been parasailing on our lake, courtesy of  the Young Life camp’s community open-house days, and have visited the local public observatory for intimate views of Jupiter’s moons and Saturn’s rings, and my sister Terry and niece Emily did the high ropes/cliff climbing course  at Ausable Chasm, all high-flying adventures of a sort.  We’ve been fishing, hiking, kayaking, SUP-ing swimming, tubing, boating,  sailing, star-gazing, puzzling, boozing, eclipse gazing,  log splitting, brewery visiting, building constructing (Greg) and smore’s creating with lots of laughs along the way.

Labor Day has passed and school is starting and it’s the first time I have never felt that sentimental ‘back to school’ feeling.  It could  be that this summer’s cool weather did not spark my summer  ‘clock’ and spring is rolling into fall uninterrupted.  However, I recently started my new career at Paul Smith’s College as the assistant coach for women’s volleyball and have been walking through their beautiful lakeside  campus so I anticipate the ‘I forgot to study for my final’ or ‘I never withdrew from class and didn’t study ever’ nightmares will commence anyway.   (I never have the ‘showing up with out shoes’ nightmare because I have done my darnedest over the years to insure a hefty inventory of shoes to compensate).   Coaching will be an interesting experience of the classic ‘do as I say, not as I  do’ variety.  Actually, this is the penultimate example of ‘those who can’t’ variety, but it will certainly be fun and I am learning a lot more about volleyball.  The girls are friendly and hopefully young adult drama will be  kept to a minimum.  I have even solo-coached a few sets already!  Thankfully the girls are fairly experienced.  But it would be nice if college staff meetings could be on time and on point.  Otherwise, a new season is beginning and I’m looking forward to it.
